Drogheda United have announced the re-signing of midfielder Ryan Brennan for the 2024 campaign.

The 32-year-old first represented the Claret and Blues in 2010 and is in his third stint at the club, having first returned in 2012 after turning out for Monaghan Utd prior to their untimely demise.

Speaking with his club's media, Brennan referenced that spell as well as his joy at prolonging his stay on Windmill Road.

“I’m delighted to sign a new contract. The club is going in the right direction and when Kevin picked up the phone, it was an easy decision. There’s been a lot of hard work over the last few years, and I’m looking forward to next season now.

“Looking back to 2013 and my second stint at the club, it was similar to the last couple of years, with volunteers and massive efforts going in behind the scenes to keep the club afloat.

“Everyone behind the scenes has worked really hard. It’s another massive year for us, to try and push on from last season.

“I’ve had to adapt my game as well; I did half a pre-season last year as the season before I got injured in pre-season. That has stood to me, and I felt as fit as I ever have last season,” Brennan said.

With 33 appearances and half a dozen goals in 2023, that fitness stood to him, and boss Kevin Doherty, speaking to the club media, referenced this as well as the player's versatility.

“Ryan was a contender for player of the year last season. His contribution, playing a lot more than he did the previous season, was significant.

“Myself, Daire, and the staff learned from the year before where he had got injured in pre-season. We managed him a bit differently, and his fitness levels, how he looks after himself, he’s an example to everyone else. He epitomises everything about what we want at the club.

“When I needed Ryan to play, up front, in the middle, or at centre-half, he was brilliant. You can see what it means to him playing for his local club too. He’s a seriously talented player who contributes massively in every game he plays, at both ends of the pitch he’s so effective,” Doherty said.
