Midfielders Gary Deegan and Darragh Markey have both penned new deals with Drogheda United to keep them at the club for the 2024 campaign.

Deegan, 34, has played a key role for the Boynesiders since joining them ahead of the 2021 season under previous boss Tim Clancy.

And Markey has enjoyed a similarly impressive stint at Weavers Park having joined at the same time as the ex-Shelbourne midfield general.

Deegan has played over 100 times for United while Markey is on 99 appearances for the club.

“It was a no brainer,” Deegan said after re-signing. “I’ve been at the club for three years, it’s a healthy working relationship so why not continue with that.

“I think every club wants to try and improve every year and we are no different.

“We’ve made some positive, encouraging early signings which is good, and I’m looking forward to working with the new lads too.”

The return of former St Patrick’s Athletic man Markey will also provide a boost for Kevin Doherty’s side as they head into the 2024 season under new ownership.

“I’m delighted to have Darragh back,” the Drogs boss said.

“He’s an important player for us with the way we play. Once again, he had plenty of other options so I’m thrilled he’s with us.

“He’s a big player for us and he will be going forward.”
