Winning streak pleases Dunne
Cork City Foras Co-op boss Tommy Dunne was happy with his side's third win on the bounce, as well as the club's first clean sheet, at Turner's Cross on Friday night.
The Leesiders claimed a 1-0 triumph over Longford Town, thanks to Davin O'Neill’s 10th minute strike, and it means that City have now moved onto 11 points from six games played.
While the game wasn't the prettiest, Dunne will say that a win is a win and once the club keep adding points to their tally he will be more than satisfied.
It was a strange game; Longford had a strong spell in the closing stages of the first half, but they couldn’t capitalise and Cork dominated the second period.
"Overall, we're happy. We knew it was going to be a difficult fixture and we're happy to get the three points and continue to keep ourselves in a good position for the future," said Dunne.
"Three points is what is most important. The game itself wasn't a good spectacle for the supporters, there was a lot of scrappiness within the match. We started well and Davin [O'Neill] got the goal but I thought Longford were the better side for the rest of the first-half.
"They created a few chances and they opened us up a few times. We looked a bit off the pace in the first-half. In the second-half we came back into the game and Davin could have got a couple with a little bit of luck."
Shelbourne are next up for The Leesiders in the league and Dunne thinks the recent good run of form will help build a platform before travelling to Tolka Park.
Several players were missing against Longford, although most will be back to feature against Dermot Keely's side. Greg O’Halloran has now served his two-game ban, while Wille Heffernan, Eoin Forde and John Dineen will be available for selection on their return from the United States.
"Any three points we pick up are good for us," he joked as he prepares for Monday's EA Sports Cup clash against Wexford Youths.
"We're heading to Shels next Friday, which is, again, another tough place to go. We're hoping we'll have Greg [O'Halloran] back and maybe one or two more will have a bit more game time under their belt [against Wexford] like Dave Warren.
"I think at the moment I know where we are pretty much at, we're outside the top two or three at the minute. If we keep improving and working hard, we should do OK."
