Dundalk striker Sam Durrant has agreed to stay with the club for the 2024 season after making a strong impression following his arrival from Sheffield Wednesday in August.

The 22-year-old was a free agent in the summer following the termination of his contract with Wednesday and he linked up with Stephen O’Donnell’s side for the last three months of the 2023 season.

He went on to make a dozen appearances for The Lilywhites, ten in the league and two in the FAI Cup, scoring two league goals.

A former youth player at both Everton and Liverpool, Durrant also had a four-year spell at Blackburn Rovers where he played alongside another Dundalk player, Louis Annesley, in the club’s U-23 side.

He moved to Sheffield Wednesday in the summer of 2022 but only got to make one appearance with their first team before deciding to cross the Irish Sea and join the Co. Louth side.

Durrant spoke to dundalkfc.com and said “I’m delighted to be here for another year. It’s a great opportunity for me and I want to have a big impact on the team and help us to push for trophies.

“I didn’t expect to settle in as quickly as I did and that probably allowed me to do well but I want to kick on even more next season and show the fans what I’m really about as a player.”

Head Coach Stepen O’Donnell is equally enthusiastic about having Durrant for another season. “Sam came here in mid-season and gave us a real spark,”said O’Donnell. “I’m really looking forward to working with him when he has a full pre-season under his belt,"

Meanwhile, John Martin has left the club with Shelbourne announcing the signing of the Kilkenny native who joined from Waterford in December 2021 and went on to make 73 appearances for the Lilywhites, scoring 10 times.
