Axel Sjoberg signs new contract with St. Patrick’s Athletic

The Swedish right back commits his future with the Saints for the 2024 campaign.

St. Patrick’s Athletic right back Axel Sjoberg has signed a new contract with the club to remain for at least another season in 2024.

The 23-year-old signed for St. Pats back in March 2023 and made his debut for the club against UCD in a 3-0 home win.

Sjoberg went on to make only 7 appearances throughout the season as a persistent hamstring problem hampered his campaign. Eventually the Pats full back needed surgery which meant he missed the FAI Cup Final win against Bohemians in November.

On signing a new contract with the club, the Swede expressed his delight.

"I'm really happy to have signed a new deal at St Pat's.” he told the St. Pats media team.

“Despite my injuries, I've had a really enjoyable time at the club so far.

Last season was amazing, we had a great year and a big win in the Cup Final.

I would like that thank everyone for all of their help and support so far, both on the pitch and off the pitch, in terms of my recovery and treatment and also how everyone helped me settle into the club and into living in Dublin,”

Manager Jon Daly also stated his happiness with Sjoberg staying for another year.

“I'm very happy to have Axel back on board.

He showed a lot of promise in the games when he was fit, he has been unfortunate with injuries, limiting him to only seven appearances so far but he did well in training and in the matches he played in.

He's been working hard with the Medical and Fitness Team since his operation, at 23 he is a good age now to kick-on and progress.

He's a great character and we're looking forward to seeing Axel back fully fit in 2024."

The news comes after earlier in the week the club announced the departures of Thijs Timmermans, Harry Brockbank, and Serge Akatayi.
