Galway United re-sign Brendan Clarke ahead of Premier Division return
Brendan Clarke has re-signed for Galway United with the goalkeeper committing to remain with the Tribesmen for the 2024 League of Ireland season.
Clarke made 40 appearances for Galway in all competitions last season having joined ahead of the 2023 campaign after departing Shelbourne.
The goalkeeper kept 21 clean sheets as Galway United won the First Division title and made it all the way to an FAI Cup semi-final.
Ahead of the side’s FAI Cup semi-final against Bohemians, Clarke spoke to extratime.comabout heading west to join Galway United after speaking to manager John Caulfield:
“He told me what he wanted to do this year was to win the division.
“It wasn't about going up in the playoffs. Probably because they've not had great playoffs in the past, it was all about winning the division that's all we spoke about all year, and it was something I wanted to be a part of.
“It wasn't financial or anything. Since I left Pat’s and going to shells, it's been about going into training with a smile on your face and being able to work and not take your work home with you.
“Obviously, you have to live your life as a professional footballer but there were times in the past where you'd leave training in bad moods and stuff and you're taking into your family life or whatever.
“So I felt it was a good fit in terms of what I wanted from the move and what I wanted from Galway United a club and fit was a good fit from what John wanted in in a new goalkeeper.”
The 38 year old began his career with St Patrick’s Athletic and had spells with Sporting Fingal, Sigo Rovers, Limerick and Shelbourne – Clarke has won numerous honours with a Premier Division title, two FAI Cups, three EA Sports Cups, two First Division titles and a President’s Cup to his name.
