Shamrock Rovers have announced the signing of Lee Steacy from Cobh Ramblers.

The goalkeeper joins the Hoops after an impressive campaign with Cobh, helping Ramblers to a third place finish in the First Division.

“He had a really good season at Cobh. We spoke to Lee last year, we know him quite well. He’s really close with some of the group here, so we’ve been in contact for some time,” manager Stephen Bradley said, speaking to the club’s website.

“I think that he’s the perfect fit for what we need and what we are looking for. It’s really important that he’s here to push Leon and also to help him.

“He has experience in the league, and has played a lot of games in the league, so I think he’s a good fit for Leon and will help Leon on and off the pitch.

“With his age (30), when you see how long Alan Mannus played, I think that a goalkeeper is a different animal to outfield players.

“When we look at Leon, he’s a really young goalkeeper so I think it’s important to have a bit of experience around him, and Lee is someone who has been around the league and knows the highs and lows of it, so it’s a good fit for us all.”

It’s a return to Tallaght for the shot stopper, Steacy played for Rovers’ under 19 team over ten years before departing the club in 2012.

He will provide competition for Leon Pohls with the starting position between the posts up for grabs after Alan Mannus’ retirement this year.
