Women’s Champions League Wrap - Caldwell flys the flag for Ireland
With Liam Scales flying the flag for Ireland in the Champions League with Celtic, this week Diane Caldwell was the lone Irish woman lining out in the Champions League.
At the Stadion Letzigrund, Zurich lost 6-0 to Ajax with Caldwell playing the 90 minutes.
The Women’s Champions League second round is a set of knock out two legged matches with the winners earning a place in the group stages which begin next month.
The winners of the knock out ties (seven teams from the Champions path and five from the League path) will join Barcelona, Lyon, Bayern Munich and Chelsea in the 16 team (four group) group stages in November.
Glasgow City defeated Shelbourne in the Champions League first round.
In Wednesday night’s second round first leg tie Aoife Colvill, Emily Whelan and Abbie Larkin (who made her full debut for City at the weekend having recently signed from Shamrock Rovers) were all unused subs as City went down 4-0 at home to Norwegian side Brann in the game played at Petershill Park in Glasgow.
Other Wednesday night first leg results
Real Madrid 2 – 1 Valerenga
Roma 3 - 0 Vorskla
Apollon 0 – 7 Benfica
Spartak Subotica 1 – 2 Rosengard
Slavia Praha 5 – 0 Cluj
Hacken 2 – 2 Twente
Aoife Mannion remains out injured so she wasn’t part of the Manchester United team who drew 1-1 with PSG in the Leigh Sports Village on Tuesday night.
With the heavy defeats for Zurich and Glasgow City, Mannion is likely to be Ireland's only hope of a player in the group stages if her team can progress by PSG.
Other Tuesday night first leg results
Paris FC 3 – 3 Wolfsburg
Eintracht Frankfurt 5 – 0 Sparta Praha
Valur – 0 4 St Polten
All the second leg ties will take place on Wednesday 18th October.
