Republic of Ireland's hopes for the upcoming UEFA EURO 2024 qualifiers have taken a hit as striker Evan Ferguson has been declared unfit to play.

In a game where he netted his first ever Premier League hat-trick, the Brighton and Hove Albion forward suffered a knee injury during his club's 3-0 victory against Newcastle United this past Saturday.

Despite reporting for international duty on Sunday, post-assessment by the Ireland medical team determined that Ferguson's injury was serious enough to rule him out of the crucial upcoming fixtures.

The Irish squad will proceed without Ferguson and is scheduled to travel to Paris today.

They are gearing up for their match against the formidable French side on Thursday, September 7 before facing the Netherlands at home on Sunday, September 10.
