League Preview: Waterford -v- Athlone Town
WATERFORD
Waterford boss Keith Long has backed his side to respond from Monday night’s draw against Treaty United at the Market’s Field.
The Blues were cruising in Limerick with a 2-0 lead before being pegged back by Treaty for a 2-2 draw.
But they do at least have a chance to respond on Friday when they welcome Athlone Town to the RSC (kick-off is at 7.45pm).
“We were disappointed with Monday [v Treaty].
“We were poor and very flat in the game,” he said. “We were 2-0 up in the game and we’re disappointed with the goals we conceded.
“We have to dust ourselves down and not feel sorry for ourselves.
“It’s important to regroup and get ourselves organised now because we know that Athlone have some really talented players who can punish us.
“We need to be ready for another tough game.”
Ronan Coughlan, Barry Baggley and Harry Nevin are all out injured.
ATHLONE TOWN
Athlone Town may be left nervously looking over their shoulder if they fall to defeat against Waterford on Friday evening.
Dario Castelo’s men looked in control of their play-off destiny prior to last weekend after a 3-2 win away to Longford Town.
But last weekend’s defeat against Wexford means they are just six points clear of Longford with eight games to play.
And with Longford set to play on Saturday that gap could be closed to three as early as this weekend.
But Athlone have a frontline that can terrify any defence and they will be looking to do as much against the Blues at the RSC.
Referee: Chris Sheehan.
