Aitana Bonmatí and Erling Haaland voted UEFA Players of the Year
As UEFA kicked off the new season in Monaco with the draw for the Champions League, they also named their player and coach of the year – in both the men’s and women’s game.
Spanish World Cup winner Aitana Bonmatí won the women’s player award, while Champions League winner from Manchester City Erling Haaland was voted the men’s player of the year.
Haaland’s club manager Pep Guardiola won coach of the year while England boss Sarina Wiegman won the women’s coach of the year award.
UEFA Women’s Player of the Year
Aitana Bonmatí was crucial in Barcelona’s victorious UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign last season and was central to Spain’s win at the recent FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Australia forward Sam Kerr was second while Real Madrid and Spain defender Olga Carmona was third.
UEFA Women’s Coach of the Year
Sarina Wiegman was voted the 2022/23 UEFA Women’s Coach of the Year. The Dutch coach, who led the England women’s national team to the final of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup this summer after having overseen England’s EURO 2022 success last year.
Spain’s women’s national team coach Jorge Vilda came second.
UEFA Men’s Player of the Year
Manchester City striker Erling Haaland was named the 2022/23 UEFA Men’s Player of the Year.
The record-breaking Norwegian goalscorer last season became both the youngest and the fastest player to score 35 Champions League goals, driving his club to its first UEFA Champions League title in Istanbul in June.
Argentina forward Lionel Messi and Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne took second and third places respectively.
UEFA Men’s Coach of the Year
Manchester City's head coach Pep Guardiola was voted the 2022/23 UEFA Men’s Coach of the Year. He guided his team to its first UEFA Champions League title, alongside Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Super Cup triumphs.
Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti came second while FC Internazionale Milano’s head coach Simone Inzaghi was third.
