League Preview: Drogheda United -v- Cork City

Drogheda United welcome relegation play-off rivals Cork City to Weavers Park on Friday evening (kick-off is at 7.45pm).

The Boynesiders are five points clear of Liam Buckley’s side and know that a win could go a long way to ensuring their top-flight survival for another year.

But they have lost goalkeeper Colin McCabe this week – with the former Shelbourne shot-stopper leaving the club.

“Firstly I’d like to thank all the staff, board members, volunteers and everyone associated with the club during my time here,” he said this week. 

“When I spoke to Kevin, we had an open and honest conversation but unfortunately I had to make a difficult decision.

“I never got the opportunity to thank the fans or say goodbye so thanks to the wonderful fans who give the team so much support on a weekly basis. 

“It was an honour to represent such a great club with great community values. I'll be cheering on the lads with some massive games to come, and I look forward to watching a game from a different perspective in the near future.”

In team news, Drogheda will be without Dylan Grimes through injury, but Evan Weir is back from a ban.

CORK CITY



Fresh from their 3-0 FAI Cup win over Waterford on Monday night, Cork City will be looking to bring that form into the league.

The Leesiders previously went on an eight-game winless streak before beating the Blues – but the acid test awaiting them is seeing if they can do it in the Premier Division.

And Buckley reckons it might help them push on again.

“I thought we merited our win. Maybe 3-0 might be a bit flattering, I don’t know, but I’m just pleased for the lads,” he said. 

“We cut that now and move on and please god we give a good account of ourselves up in Drogheda.

“We went up there before and won 1-0 so let’s go up there again and see how we go.”
