Cathal Heffernan joins Newcastle United from AC Milan
Newcastle United has confirmed the signing of Irish defender Cathal Heffernan from Italian giants AC Milan.
The 18-year-old centre-back, who has represented the Republic of Ireland from the under-15 to under-18 levels, comes to the Magpies with an impressive pedigree.
He made waves in his home country when he debuted for Cork City at a mere 16 years of age in October 2021.
This early show of promise earned him a loan to Milan during the latter half of the 2021/22 season, and the Serie A heavyweights quickly turned that into a permanent deal the following summer.
Commenting on his move to Tyneside, a jubilant Heffernan told nufc.co.uk, "It's surreal to join such a big club like Newcastle."
He went on to emphasize the warmth he felt during his trial, remarking on the camaraderie among the players and the cordiality of the Newcastle public.
Reflecting on his Italian sojourn, he stated, "I have become a much better defender during my time at AC Milan...which should stand me in good stead for the future."
Heffernan's immediate focus is clear, "The goal, when playing Academy football, is to try and break into a first-team as quick as you can and, hopefully, I can do that at Newcastle United."
It is the second Irish addition to Newcastle's youth ranks this year. Goalkeeper Reece Byrne, hailing from Bohemians, joined the Magpies back in April.
