Aberdeen sign Republic of Ireland international Jamie McGrath
Aberdeen has welcomed Republic of Ireland international Jamie McGrath as the latest addition to its roster, making him their tenth acquisition of the 2023 summer.
McGrath, a 26-year-old midfielder, was previously a free agent following his decision to terminate his contract with EFL League One's Wigan Athletic.
Pending international clearance, McGrath will be eligible to play in the upcoming Europa League play-off against Häcken in Sweden this Thursday.
Manager Barry Robson praised the newcomer, stating, “Jamie is an international player who brings with him good experience of the league.”
He believes McGrath's skills in creative play and passing, coupled with his goal contributions, will enrich Aberdeen's midfield.
Robson added, "We look forward to working with Jamie and giving him the platform to showcase the ability he has."
Starting his professional journey with St Patrick’s Athletic, McGrath made his debut a few weeks shy of turning eighteen.
With nine goals in 66 appearances, his tenure at Richmond Park included victories in two League of Ireland Cups and the Leinster Senior Cup.
His success caught the attention of Dundalk, where he further flourished, accumulating two League of Ireland titles, the FAI Cup, two additional League of Ireland Cups, the President of Ireland Cup, the all-Ireland Champions Cup, and the distinction of PFAI Young Player of the Year in 2018.
McGrath's transfer to St Mirren in January 2020 marked the start of his Scottish football journey.
He registered impressive stats, scoring 20 goals in 78 games, and was recognized as the club’s Player of the Year.
His international career also commenced during this period, debuting for the Republic of Ireland in 2021.
His performance secured him a spot in Wigan Athletic by January 2022.
Despite aiding in their promotion to the EFL Championship, McGrath's time at DW Stadium was brief.
He returned to Scottish football on loan to Dundee United, scoring eight goals in 32 league matches.
Now, with a two-year commitment to Aberdeen, McGrath will don the number 7 jersey for the 2023/24 season.
Expressing his excitement, Jamie remarked, “The size of the club sells itself and the way the manager wants to play suits me so hopefully I can add something to the team. It’s a really exciting challenge and I want to be part of something special here.”
