Manchester City win UEFA Super Cup
English and Champions League champions Manchester City lifted the UEFA Super Cup in the Stadium Georgios Karaiskakis in Piraeus in Greece on Wednesday night after defeating Sevilla on penalties.
The game ended all square after normal time and with UEFA stipulating no extra-time it went to penalty kicks. They were all dispatched until Sevilla defender Nemanja Gudelj clattered the tenth penalty of the shootout off the crossbar to give City the prize.
Sevilla had led for much of the game. Youssef En-Nesyri had powered home a header from Marcos Acuna’s cross from the left in the 25th minute.
Cole Palmer equalised in the 63rd minute also with a fine header. He rose to head home Rodri’s centre.
It was the fifth time Sevilla had played City in European competition and they have yet to get a win – they had lost their four previous matches.
It was City’s first appearance in this curtain raiser for UEFA competitions for the season played between the winners of the European Cup and Europa League. This was Sevilla seventh appearance in this match but they have won just the once – winning aginst Barcelona 3-0 in 2006).
