Chelsea clinch Caicedo in record-breaking deal
Chelsea has successfully signed Ecuadorian star Moises Caicedo.
The 21-year-old midfielder joins the Blues on an eight-year contract, with an option for a further year.
Caicedo transfers from fellow Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion for an initial £100m, a fee that could potentially escalate to a whopping £115m.
The move is significant as Liverpool had previously struck a deal with the midfielder. However, Caicedo expressed his desire to sport the Chelsea blue instead.
Sharing his elation, Caicedo stated, “I am so happy to join Chelsea! It’s a dream come true to be here, and I can’t wait to get started with the team.”
Born in Santo Domingo, Ecuador, Caicedo entered the professional scene with Independiente del Valle, marking his senior debut at just 17.
His early career witnessed a significant highlight when he led his team to a U-20 Copa Libertadores triumph against River Plate.
The dynamic midfielder moved to Brighton in February 2021 for 4 million pounds, initially taking time to adjust with a loan spell at Belgian club Beerschot.
However, upon his return, Caicedo solidified his place in Brighton's first team.
The previous season saw him appear 43 times for the Seagulls, playing a pivotal role in their commendable sixth-place finish in the Premier League.
His performances didn't go unnoticed as he clinched both the club’s Player of the Season and Players' Player of the Season titles.
Brighton's technical director, David Weir, extolled Caicedo, describing him as "one of the top midfielders in the world." Chairman Tony Bloom, while acknowledging Caicedo’s wish to move, ensured that the club's valuation was fully met.
The versatile midfielder has come a long way since making his debut for Independiente del Valle in 2019 and his first international appearance for Ecuador against Argentina in 2020.
