Kepa Arrizabalaga makes season-long switch to Real Madrid from Chelsea
Real Madrid has secured the services of Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga on a season-long loan deal.
The 28-year-old goalkeeper, who originally hails from Ondarroa, Vizcaya, made a significant mark in the English Premier League and will now return to Spain, his homeland.
During his tenure with Chelsea, which began in 2018, Kepa solidified his position as a key player, with 163 appearances to his credit.
He played a role in the 2018/19 Europa League final against Arsenal, where Chelsea emerged victorious with a 4-1 scoreline. Kepa's heroics were further showcased during the European Super Cup against Villarreal in 2021 when he saved two decisive penalties.
Commenting on his achievements, Real Madrid emphasized, "Kepa Arrizabalaga has joined Real Madrid. Our squad has been strengthened by the addition of a goalkeeper with international experience, having won the Nations League 2023 with the Spanish national team and having played more than 100 Premier League games."
Kepa's journey in professional football began at Athletic Club's youth academy in 2004.
By 2012, still a youth player, he was integrated into the first team.
His path to Chelsea included spells at Ponferradina and Valladolid and a significant stint at Athletic Club where he made his debut in 2016.
In addition to his club accolades, Kepa's international reputation also grew. He was a part of Spain's squad that won the Nations League in 2023 and the European Under-19 Championship in 2012.
His departure from Chelsea follows a season where he was handed the captain's armband for the first time.
