Candystripes skipper set to return
Derry City could be boosted by the return of captain Kevin Deery, who has yet to feature for the club this season due to a niggling injury.
The classy midfielder turned down offers from several clubs in order to stick with The Candystripes, although he has missed the opening four games of the First Division.
He has been working hard in training to build up his fitness and Deery now feels that he is ready to make his competitive comeback - even if he has yet to get fully involved in full training.
Derry boss Stephen Kenny will have to decide when is the best time to bring his captain into the team as there is always the possibility that the injury could flare up again.
"Thankfully I've had no reaction to the injury so far. Obviously, I'm anxious to get back into full blown training sessions and, fingers crossed, I'll be twisting and turning later this week," Deery told the Derry Journal.
"If everything goes well for me, I would want to make myself available for the next game against Longford, but that will be a decision for Stephen [Kenny].
"If the manager decides that the Longford match might be too early for me, then I'll have to wait until the Mervue game at the Brandywell the following week. I know I can't afford to take any chances but, hopefully, I'll be over the worst and ready to get back into action, that's what really I want.
"I've been out long enough and the sooner I get back to playing, the better. I'm now totally focused on making myself available for selection if everything goes well and then, hopefully, battling my way back into the team."
