Liverpool FC Women's stalwart defender, Jasmine Matthews, has renewed her commitment to the club by extending her contract.

The dependable 30-year-old centre-back is currently enjoying her second stint with the Reds, having previously played two seasons for Bristol City.

Matthews played a role in helping the side clinch the FA Women's Championship in the 2021-22 season, helping them to their return to the Barclays Women's Super League where she marked 18 league starts.

Although she predominantly features as a left-sided centre-back, her adaptability also sees her comfortably slot into a defensive midfield position.

On her decision to extend the contract, Matthews expressed her contentment with Liverpoolfc.com, stating, "I'm extremely happy. When Matt [Beard] spoke to me, it was a no-brainer to extend my deal here."

Reflecting on her time at the club, she added, "Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. We're all friends. Matt deserves a lot of credit for that – the people he brings in are just good people. Having good people around speaks volumes, and that includes the backroom staff."

This summer, the club has introduced six fresh faces to its roster. Matthews conveyed her eagerness to collaborate with the new talents.

"The signings are young yet skilled. Watching them during training, I see the ball moving so swiftly. I'm quite eager to witness our journey this season. My aim is to maintain my fitness, play as much as I can, and contribute positively to the team's performance," she elaborated.

Highlighting the unwavering support from the fans, Matthews remarked, "The Liverpool fans have always been exceptional. During some of last year's challenging games, their enthusiasm really provided the boost we needed."

Manager Matt Beard lauded Matthews for her exceptional skills, dubbing her as the "Rolls Royce" of the team.

"She's a gifted footballer with a remarkable left foot. She seamlessly navigates herself out of situations most wouldn't manage to. She's not only an excellent defender but also a wonderful person. We're keenly anticipating two more years with Jas Matthews onboard," he said.
