Cousins taking it all in his stride

Longford Town may have the worst defensive record in the First Division after four games played, but Tony Cousins is not too worried about that statistic.

The experienced manager knows that there are issues to address after watching his team concede 11 goals so far, although he is upbeat about their chances of tightening things up at the back.

Cousins has been enthused by the attacking flair, ability to score goals and fighting spirit that his team have displayed in their four league outings. Now if only they can match that with a strong defence.

"I'm certainly not ringing the alarm bells at the minute," Cousins told the club's official website.

"We've missed the experience of Philly Byrne at the back and at times like this when you've got a new group of players you need your experienced players to be fit and available. I've seen enough from the performances to show we can be up there.

"We're the second highest scorers in the division and we have the worst defensive record. It doesn't take a genius to work out what's wrong. If we can tighten up at the back and stay in the pack after the first ten or eleven games I'm confident we can kick on.

"When you put a squad together you'll always have to work harder on one aspect of your game. Sometimes you'll find you're solid at the back but can't score. With us it's the other way around.

"But we've got great character in the squad and showed it by the way we came back on Saturday. Most sides would have collapsed after going three down. But we fought back and made a game of it."
