Irish involvement at World Cup continues with Michelle O’Neill set to officiate in last 16
While the Girls in Green have exited at the group stages of the World Cup, Irish involvement will continue with Wexford match official Michelle O’Neill running the line this weekend in Auckland at Switzerland v Spain.
This will be her third game of the tournament having been assistant referee for the group games between Brazil and Panama in Adelaide and Sweden v Italy in Wellington last weekend.
Once again she will work with Welsh referee Cheryl Foster.
The duo have been working together on games over the last year including this season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League Final between Barcelona and Wolfsburg in the PSV Stadium and Women’s Super League games including Spurs against Brighton in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the Everton and Arsenal game.
O’Neill was assistant referee in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final.
She was also part of an all-women’s refereeing team, led by France’s Stephanie Frappart, who took charge of the 2019 UEFA Super Cup when Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side defeated Chelsea on penalties in Istanbul.
