Cambridge United welcomes Elias Kachunga as sixth summer signing
Cambridge United have announced the signing of 31-year-old forward Elias Kachunga on a one-year contract. This move makes Kachunga the sixth summer signing for Mark Bonner's squad.
Kachunga, originally from Germany, began his football career at Borussia Mönchengladbach, later playing for SC Paderborn and FC Ingolstadt 04.
In 2016, he moved to England to join Huddersfield on a loan deal, scoring 13 goals to aid the Terriers' promotion to the Premier League.
Following a successful loan spell, Kachunga made his move to Huddersfield permanent, where he had three productive seasons.
After a season with Sheffield Wednesday, he joined Bolton Wanderers, his most recent club.
During his time at Bolton, Kachunga was part of the team that won the EFL Trophy, scoring the third goal in their 4-0 final victory over Plymouth Argyle.
Now, with less than a week to go until the 2023/24 season, Kachunga joins the U's, expressing excitement over his move:
“I am really excited to be here. I had good talks with the gaffer, he explained what he wants to do moving forward with the Club, and I was really interested in this project.”
He added, “I just had the feeling it is the right place to be right now. I am feeling good, the season is almost here, and I am just excited to get started and get back on the pitch.”
Mark Bonner, Cambridge United's head coach, expressed his satisfaction with the new signing, saying: “I am delighted to welcome Elias to the Club. He is a player of excellent pedigree who has played a lot of football at a higher level."
Bonner added, “Last season he was part of a strong Bolton Wanderers team and played 50 games in all competitions. He will complement our existing options in the attacking area of the pitch and can play anywhere across the front line."
"We have received nothing but positive character references in our work to sign Elias, and once we get him up to speed, I have no doubt he will play a big role in helping us achieve our objectives this season.”
