Brazilian striker Wesley Moraes transfers from Aston Villa to Stoke City
Stoke City has announced the signing of Brazilian international striker Wesley Moraes from Aston Villa.
The 26-year-old striker, who has had a successful career in England, Belgium, and Spain, signed a one-year contract at the bet365 Stadium. He becomes Stoke's ninth addition this summer.
Wesley joined Aston Villa in 2019 after ending the previous season as Club Brugge's top scorer.
He appeared in 21 Premier League matches during his debut season, scoring five goals.
However, an injury shortened his first campaign in England.
He spent the following season on loan at Levante in Spain, featuring in 37 games in all competitions and helping Los Granotes secure a third-place finish in the Segunda Division.
"Wesley provides us with the experience of playing at the highest level and also the tactical awareness, technical ability and physical attributes to unlock opposition who set up with a defensive approach," said Ricky Martin, Technical Director at Stoke City.
Martin emphasized Wesley's extensive Premier League experience with Aston Villa and successful spells in Slovakia, Belgium, and Spain.
Reflecting on his move to Stoke City, Wesley said, “I had a very positive six months in the Premier League with Aston Villa before my injury and I now see this move to Stoke City as a great opportunity for me to show my best football in England.”
He added that his last season at Levante helped him get back to 100%, and he's now ready to give his all at Stoke City.
He further explained his decision to move, saying, “I spoke to my representatives about the fresh project here at Stoke and we collectively decided this is the best place for me to join.”
Wesley's signing comes just ahead of Stoke's final pre-season friendly against Everton.
