Fulham signs Ajax's Calvin Bassey
Fulham has announced the signing of defender Calvin Bassey from Ajax for an undisclosed fee, with international clearance expected early next week.
The 23-year-old Nigerian international has agreed to a contract through the summer of 2027, with an option for the club to extend by a further 12 months.
Bassey shared his enthusiasm about the move in a conversation with FFCtv in the United States, stating, “I know how big of a club Fulham is. They always have quality players, they’re playing in the Premier League, the best league in the world, so I didn’t have to think much about it."
Fulham’s Tony Khan echoed the excitement, “I'm thrilled to welcome Calvin Bassey to Fulham Football Club! He's a young and versatile defender; a homegrown player who developed at Leicester City's academy before moving on to play for Rangers and then for Ajax, as well as Nigeria's national team."
Born in Italy, Bassey moved to London at a young age and started his football career at Leicester City's academy.
His career ascended rapidly after a move to Rangers in 2020, where he experienced two successful years and helped Rangers win the Scottish Premiership by an impressive 25 points.
Despite a heartbreaking defeat in the UEFA Europa League Final by Eintracht Frankfurt, Bassey received considerable acclaim for his performance, catching the attention of Ajax.
His transfer to Amsterdam for an initial €23m marked a club record sale for Rangers. During his time in the Netherlands, Bassey made 39 appearances across all competitions, scoring once and assisting five times.
In addition to his club career, Bassey has also represented Nigeria on the international stage, earning 10 caps since his debut in a World Cup Qualifier last year.
