Plymouth Argyle snap up Everton's Lewis Warrington on season-long loan

Plymouth Argyle has welcomed the addition of midfielder Lewis Warrington on a season-long loan from Premier League outfit, Everton.

The 20-year-old becomes the seventh signing of the summer for Pilgrims manager Steven Schumacher.

A native of Birkenhead, Warrington was included in Everton’s pre-season preparations and featured in the club’s 0-0 draw against Bolton Wanderers.

The energetic midfielder has been a loyal Everton fan his whole life and has been part of the Toffees' fold since the age of six.

Warrington’s football journey includes playing for Everton's Under-21 side in the EFL Trophy in the 2021/22 season, and then he had a productive loan stint at Tranmere Rovers, clocking 17 appearances in Sky Bet League Two.

In August 2022, Warrington made his senior Everton debut, coming on as a substitute in a match against Fleetwood Town.

Shortly after, he donned a Fleetwood shirt, having signed for the Cod Army on Deadline Day.

During his time at Fleetwood, he played 44 games, including 39 starts, and scored one goal, helping the team to a 13th place finish in League One last season.

Plymouth Argyle manager, Steven Schumacher, is thrilled about the new signing, expressing, “I’m very pleased to welcome Lewis to Argyle for this season. He had a very good season in League One with Fleetwood last year, and I am very confident he will replicate that in the Championship with us.”

Schumacher added, “He is a very energetic midfielder, full of running, who will complement our style of play perfectly, and add to our options in that area of the pitch.”

Argyle's Director of Football, Neil Dewsnip, also lauded Warrington, saying, “Lewis is a highly-rated product of the Everton Academy, and should be a perfect fit for what we are trying to achieve at Argyle this season."

Dewsnip, who has known Warrington since his under-9 days at Everton, said, “I know what he is capable of and am pleased we have to have been able to bring him to Argyle. We have had great success in recent seasons with young, hungry, talented loan players joining us, and we look forward to Lewis adding to that list.”
