Max Johnston joins SK Sturm Graz from Motherwell
Scottish right-back, Max Johnston, is the latest recruit for Austrian side SK Puntigamer Sturm Graz, the club has announced.
The 19-year-old former Motherwell defender inked a long-term deal that will keep him in Graz until 2027.
Johnston, a Scotland Under-21 team player, recently returned to Motherwell in January 2023 following a loan spell in the Scottish second division.
He quickly made a name for himself, immediately cementing a starting position and earning the title of SFWA Young Player of the Year in Scotland's top flight.
Upon signing the contract, Johnston expressed his delight at the move and said, "I'm happy to be here in Graz and to be able to play in the strong Austrian league and an international group stage."
"I had great conversations with Andreas Schicker and coach Christian Ilzer and I'm absolutely convinced that I'm in the right place here. I can't wait for things to start and for me to be able to attack with the team."
SK Sturm's Managing Director Sport, Andreas Schicker, commented on the new signing, saying: "We are proud and happy that a top talent like Max Johnston has decided to join SK Sturm. Max has already proven in Scotland what great qualities he has."
"With his expansive style of play, he gives us another component in the full-back position and will thus positively fuel the competition. Max will have the time to internalize our game principles - we are looking forward to him and are convinced that he will bring a lot of joy to the fans in Graz."
