FAI Cup round-up: Galway United and Waterford ease into second round

Galway United eased into the second round of the FAI Cup despite falling behind to Bangor Celtic on Saturday evening.

The Tribesmen began their cup campaign following a sensational league season that has seen them all race ahead of the top of the First Division.

But they got an early fright against Bangor Celtic from the Leinster Senior League at home.

Former Cabinteely and Bray Wanderers youngster Adam Maher found the net with a cross come shot to open the scoring.

But Galway responded well and eventually found themselves 3-1 ahead at the half-time break.

Former Waterford man Wassim Aouachria levelled matters before a Stephen Walsh brace put John Caulfield’s side in control.

Killian Brouder then found the net to ensure Galway’s path into Tuesday evening’s draw.

Meanwhile, Waterford also coasted into the next round with a victory against St Michael’s.

The Tipperary junior side were no match for Keith Long’s Blues as Ronan Coughlan opened the scoring.

New signing Sam Perry also got on the scoresheet alongside Cameron Cresswell, Romeo Akachukwu and Connor Parsons.

Bray Wanderers also won their first FAI Cup game since 2015 as they defeated Cockhill Celtic.

The Seagulls raced into a 3-0 lead during the first half as Ben Feeney, Chris Lyons and Callum Thompson all scored.

Cockhill however got a consolation at least through Ian McClure.

Meanwhile, Gorey Rangers were knocked out of the competition by Munster Senior League outfit Rockmount.

Jack O’Sullivan gave the Cork side a 42nd minute lead before Jake Courtney doubled their advantage in the 76th minute.

But Gorey did at least hit back via Michael Molloy’s goal in injury time, although it was too little too late for Wexford men.
