Newport County acquires experienced defender Ryan Delaney
Newport County have announced the signing of experienced defender Ryan Delaney from Morecambe, pending EFL approval.
This addition to the League Two club's roster is a major boost, according to manager Graham Coughlan, who noted that acquiring the 26-year-old player had been a lengthy process.
Delaney, who started his professional football career with Wexford in the League of Ireland, has experience as both a centre-half and a left-back.
In 2016, he moved to Burton Albion, a Championship club. After a loan period with Cork City in Ireland, Delaney returned to England, playing for Rochdale, AFC Wimbledon on loan, and Bolton.
In 2021, he signed a two-year contract with Morecambe, a League One team.
Coughlan shared his satisfaction about the successful acquisition, stating, “It’s been a long chase trying to get Ryan to Newport. He's what I call a proper leader who will fit our dressing room. He's a warrior and a winner.’’
Delaney, in turn, expressed optimism about the move to Newport County, saying, "It really felt like the right move for me and I’m keen to add my strengths to the team. I’m excited to get amongst the lads and see how we can complement each other to bring the best out of the team.’’
