FAI Cup Preview: Wexford -v- Avondale United
WEXFORD
Wexford will be hoping to produce a memorable run in the FAI Cup when they face Munster Senior League side Avondale United in the first round at Ferrycarrig Park this Friday night (kick-off is at 7:45pm).
The club recorded an outstanding 2-1 win over Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds last season, before a narrow 3-2 defeat to Dundalk at Ferrycarrig Park denied them a place in the quarter-final.
This time, James Keddy’s side will be hoping to go further and will have a confidence boost after their stunning 3-0 win over Bray Wanderers in the league last weekend.
It is not yet known if Aaron Dobbs will be fit enough to make the starting XI after a heavy knock last week, but the side have a promising goal threat in Thomas Oluwa who recently signed from Waterford on loan.
AVONDALE UNITED
The Cork side will be attempting to create a massive upset as they make the long trip to the South East.
The club have a commendable history, with plenty of silverware under their belt including eight FAI Intermediate Cup titles, along with being nine-time Munster Senior League Senior Premier Division winners.
Current Galway United manager John Caulfield played a huge part in this team’s history, including a season as a player in 2001-2002, before turning to management from 2002-2010.
The Carrigaline side also have a notable account in the FAI Cup, reaching the quarter-final stages in 1995 and 2014.
