In an extraordinary event on the football pitch, Didier Desprez, the goalkeeper for F91 Dudelange, scored one of the more unusual own goals during a match against St Patrick's Athletic.

The Luxembourg side was leading 1-0 on the night and held a comfortable 3-1 aggregate lead when a seemingly innocent play took a wild and unexpected turn.

The Dublin side, St Patrick's Athletic, trying to make a comeback in the match, saw a ball ricochet off their midfielder, Jamie Lennon. The ball ended up soaring high in the air towards the edge of Dudelange's box.

Desprez, the goalkeeper for Dudelange, chose to make a run for the ball. However, realising at the last moment that he was about to leap outside his area, he decided not to punch the ball away. Instead, in a split-second decision, he opted to head the ball.

Unfortunately for Desprez, his jump's angle and his late decision to use his head sent the ball in an unintended direction.

Instead of the ball moving forward, as would have been expected, it took a backward trajectory. The backtracking defenders scrambled to intervene, but it was too late. The ball ended up in the net, scoring an own goal and further diminishing Dudelange's lead.

Commentator Oisin Langan provided a vivid description of the bewildering moment during the live broadcast, a clip of which you can find below.
