Shock result means Ferencvaros will face Shamrock Rovers next week
Shamrock Rovers are rueing their exit from the Champions League on Tuesday night even more after a shock loss for Ferencvaros on Wednesday means the Hoops will play the Hungarian champions in the second round of the Europa Conference League.
Ferencvaros were expected to go through to the next round of the Champions League qualifiers having drawn 0-0 away to Kl Klaksvik in the first leg of their tie in the Faroe Islands.
However, in Budapest on Wednesday, KI won 3-0 to progress and dump Ferencvaros into next week’s Europa Conference League qualifiers.
KI were 3-0 up at half time but Ferencvaros couldn't rally in the second half.
The Hoops were beaten by Ferencvaros last season in the Europa League play-off.
Rovers lost the first leg in Budapest 4-0, with Stephen Bradley's side winning the return leg in Tallaght 1-0 with Andy Lyons scoring the Hoops goal.
The Hungarian champions have played group stage football in each of the last four seasons (Champions League in 2020 and Europa League on the other three occasions).
Last year they reached the last 16 of the Europa League where they were eliminated by Bayer Leverkusen.
They have won their league five seasons in a row.
