The Central Bank of Ireland has introduced a €15 limited edition silver proof coin to celebrate the Ireland Women’s National Football team's accomplishments.

The coin is in honour of the team's significant influence on women's and girl’s football in Ireland. The launch comes as the team gets ready for their first Women’s World Cup match against Australia, the host country.

The coin was unveiled by international players Jamie Finn and Abbie Larkin who are currently immersed in their World Cup preparations.

They were joined by Governor Gabriel Makhlouf and Minister for Sport and Physical Education, Thomas Byrne TD, at Tolka Park. Shelbourne youth players Daisy White and Ellie O’Mahony also participated in the launch event.

Only 3,000 of these coins will be minted, and they are retailing at €65 each. Struck in .925 sterling silver to proof quality, the coins will go on sale at 10:00 on 14 July 2023 on www.collectorcoins.ie.

The Ireland Women's National Football team has a storied history, with their first official international game taking place on May 13, 1973, in Wales. The team clinched a 3-2 victory, marking the beginning of a series of triumphs.

The pinnacle of their journey so far has been their qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup following a playoff victory against Scotland, securing their first ever spot in a major tournament.

Governor Gabriel Makhlouf expressed pride in the launch, saying, "The Central Bank is proud to launch this limited issue coin to mark the significance of the Ireland Women’s National Football team. They are a credit to the country and they are heroes to a generation of younger players and fans."

Louise Cassidy, FAI Director of Marketing & Communications, welcomed the unique honour, saying, "In what is a special year for women and girls’ football in Ireland, it is fitting to see the Ireland Women’s National Team honoured in such a unique way."

"This limited edition commemorative coin will be treasured for years to come and act as a reminder of the incredible achievement of this team in qualifying for the FIFA Women’s World Cup,"

Minister for Sport and Physical Education, Thomas Byrne TD, echoed this sentiment, hailing it as a "remarkable and exciting time for women’s football in Ireland."

He noted that the national team's performances are inspiring girls throughout Ireland and expressed anticipation for more history to be made at the World Cup.
