Everton sign former England International Ashley Young on free transfer
Everton has kicked off their summer recruitment with the acquisition of Ashley Young on a free transfer. The seasoned former England international has agreed to a one-year deal, running until the end of June 2024.
Young, who has won 39 caps for England, carries a wealth of experience and versatility. His illustrious career has seen him lift the Premier League, Serie A, Europa League, FA Cup, and League Cup trophies.
Starting his career at Watford and Aston Villa, Young transitioned into a wing-back and full-back during his nine-year stint at Manchester United.
His performances led to his appointment as club captain in 2019. Young subsequently moved to Inter Milan, where he became only the third English player to clinch Italy's top-flight title.
After a consistent performance at left wing-back alongside Jordan Pickford during England's run to the World Cup semi-finals in 2018, Young made a return to Villa Park in 2021. His two-year tenure at the Midlands club ended this June.
With a record of 422 Premier League appearances and ranked 15th in the competition’s all-time assists with 71, Young told evertontv, “I'm delighted to be an Everton player. I can’t wait for the season to start and walking out at Goodison Park is going to be an unbelievable feeling."
Reflecting on his rapport with Everton manager Sean Dyche, Young added, "I know him and know what his passion and desire is like. His ambition, speaking to him and hearing what he wants to do to change the Club around, was a key factor in my decision."
Young's impressive performance last season with Villa saw him play 29 Premier League matches, starting 23 times.
Everton Manager Dyche lauded the signing, saying, "Ashley is a top-class professional whose record of team and personal achievements during a successful career make him an excellent addition to our squad."
