Swiss national team captain, Granit Xhaka, is set to embark on a new chapter in his career, signing a permanent deal with Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen for a reported 25m euro deal.

The central midfielder had been a part of Arsenal for seven years and this move marks his fourth club in his professional football journey.

Simon Rolfes, Bayer 04's sporting managing director, acknowledged Xhaka's contributions on the field, saying, “His ability on the pitch is well known. But, above all, there are few players who are able to so convincingly lead a team like he does thanks to his outstanding mentality and personality.”

Xhaka, after signing with Bayer, stated, "Bayer 04 is a club with an impressive history and ambitious targets. I see Bayer 04 now as a club with a great future. Everybody here is ambitious and wants to achieve something.”

During his tenure with Arsenal, which began in May 2016, Xhaka made 297 appearances in all competitions, scoring 23 goals and providing 29 assists. He won the FA Cup twice and also celebrated two FA Community Shield victories with the club.

The 30-year-old Swiss star has represented his country at all levels, tallying 115 senior appearances and 13 goals.

Born in Switzerland to Albanian parents with Kosovan heritage, Xhaka made his professional debut at 17 and has since played in two UEFA European Championships and three FIFA World Cups.

Arsenal's Sporting Director, Edu, and Manager, Mikel Arteta, have both expressed their gratitude and admiration for Xhaka's contributions to the club.

Sporting Director Edu said: “Granit has been a big part of our club for a long time. He has given us great commitment and quality over the years, playing such an important role in our progression and success. He leaves us with our huge respect and thanks. We wish Granit all the best for the future.”

Mikel Arteta added: “We are saying goodbye to a fantastic player and person loved by all of us. It has been an incredible journey together for him and he has given absolutely everything for this club. The influence Granit has had on his team mates on the pitch and colleagues at the club, will tell you just how popular he is."
