Cobh announce two additions to bolster play-off push
The Ramblers have announced the signings of Alec Byrne and Matt McKevitt for the remainder of the 2023 League of Ireland season.
Byrne leaves Treaty United after making 18 appearances in the First Division. The Cork native adds further depth to Shane Keegan’s squad to strengthen their promotion chances.
The 24-year-old came through Carrigaline United before joining Cork City at U17 level. The Cobh manager spoke to the club’s media team and stated it was a ‘no brainer’ to recruit Byrne.
“Alec joins from Treaty where I felt he was one of their standout players this season. He’s a technical player with a great football brain.
“When we heard that he might be available it was a no-brainer for us, especially with Claudio Osorio and Callum Stringer recently moving on.
He’s a tremendous addition to the set-up and I’ve no doubt that he’ll have a positive impact on our season.”
Matt McKevitt also joined the Cork side this week. The Thurles native was previously with Treaty United back in 2021 but left for non-league football and signed for Avondale United in the Munster Senior League. The 24-year-old won Player of the Year for the amateur club for the 2022/23 season.
Speaking about the arrival of McKevitt, Keegan said, “I’m delighted to have Matt on board. His goal scoring record with Avondale this season was quite tremendous, and we think he’s more than capable of delivering at this level.
“Since he’s come in training with us, he’s fitted in seamlessly with the group, in terms of both attitude and ability.
His physical profile as well is something we were after, he’s a big lad and he’s well able to put himself about. I think he can be a real addition to the squad.”
On the outgoings, Conor Drinan has left Cobh Ramblers to join rivals Cork City. The forward had made 70 appearances for the club.
Drinan adds to the list of departed players the past couple weeks with Claudio Osorio and Callum Stringer also leaving the Ramblers.
