Four extratime.com photographers shortlisted for World Sports Photography Awards 2023
Four photographers from extratime.com have been shortlisted for the World Sports Photography Awards 2023, the world’s biggest sports photography competition. The nominated photographers are Conor Ryan, Hugh de Paor, David Ribeiro, and Gerry Shanahan.
The competition, which celebrates the very best in sporting imagery, has received over 15,000 submissions from thousands of professional and semi-professional sports photographers globally across its three editions. This year, the competition includes 24 sporting categories.
Conor Ryan's finalist photograph in the "Venues and Views" category captures a moment from the derby game between Bohemian and Shamrock Rovers last season. The picture, featuring the "Love Football/Hate Racism" message, embodies the unity that sport can bring to society.
Hugh de Paor, a former racing cyclist, and cycling coach, secured his finalist status with a striking shot from the UCI Cyclo Cross World Cup 2022 featuring Hannah McClorey and Roisin Lally (Ireland).
Speaking about the recognition, de Paor said, "It's a great honour for me to be selected in the cycling category. To have Roisin and Hannah, who have expressed how honoured they are to feature as elite women in sport, leading the way for others is remarkable. I am happy to be in the shake-up amongst the elite sports photographers in the world and fly the flag for Waterford and Leitrim."
David Ribeiro has the distinction of being a finalist in three different categories: Rugby, Views and Venues, and Other Sport (Camogie). Commenting on his nomination, Ribeiro expressed his gratitude, acknowledging the subjective nature of the artform and his pleasure to be recognized amongst such outstanding peers.
"Photography is a subjective artform, so awards are always going to be debatable, but the fact that my pictures were picked among thousands and thousands and into the final round it has to mean I'm doing something well, and I'm quite humbled to be in the company of some outstanding photographers; the quality in display is insane", David told extratime.com.
Finally, Gerry Shanahan, working as a sports photographer for the Meath Chronicle in Navan, with his captivating 'In Your Face' photograph from the Senior Hurling Championship game between Trim and St Peters, Dunboyne, featuring Darragh Finlay and Mikey Cole, has also been shortlisted. Shanahan expressed his delight at being a finalist in the "Other Sport" category.
Judged by international figures from sport, media, brands, and photography, the World Sports Photography Awards are open to both professional and amateur photographers. The winning images from this year's contest are anticipated to receive global media coverage, highlighting the photographers' abilities to encapsulate the emotion and endeavour of sport in their work.
