AFC Wimbledon bolsters defensive line with Stockport County's Joe Lewis
AFC Wimbledon has announced the signing of Joe Lewis from Stockport County on a season-long loan.
Lewis, a centre-back, becomes the seventh new addition to the Wimbledon squad this summer.
Born in Wales, Lewis played an instrumental role in Stockport County's campaign last season.
He made 24 appearances and contributed significantly to the team's pursuit of promotion to League One, which they narrowly missed.
Lewis's professional career began at Swansea City's academy, where he played regularly at the youth level, attempting to secure a position in the first-team squad.
However, due to limited opportunities at Swansea, he sought a loan move to Torquay United in the National League.
At Torquay United, Lewis became an key part of the team's defensive setup. His consistent performance over three seasons earned him the Young Player of the Year award for the 2021/22 campaign. His contributions on the field began attracting attention from various clubs, eventually leading to his move to Stockport.
Upon joining Stockport, Lewis was provided with his first opportunity to play in the Football League. His performances earned him a contract extension from the club.
Now, following his move to AFC Wimbledon, he is determined to make a significant impact at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.
In his statement following the signing, Lewis expressed his excitement about joining the new club.
"It’s brilliant to be here after finding out this week about the interest. Just looking around the stadium has got me excited! Knowing some of the lads will help me settle in – I was with Ali (Ali-Hamadi) at Swansea and Ryan Johnson last season at Stockport."
"It’s also great to have met all the other lads at training today. It was nice to get in and be involved. The manager played a large part in me wanting to come here. I knew he was someone I want to play for when I met him. The club is ambitious. I want to help us have a good season. Hopefully I can excite the fans.”
