Tottenham Hotspur secures James Maddison from Leicester City in long-term deal
Tottenham Hotspur have successfully secured the signing of England international, James Maddison, from Leicester City for £40 million.
The 26-year-old midfielder has agreed to a contract that will see him playing for the Spurs until 2028.
Maddison began his professional journey with Coventry City, where he first made his mark in August 2014.
He later signed on with Norwich City in January 2016, spending the rest of the 2015/16 season on loan with the Sky Blues. His record includes 42 appearances and five goals for his hometown club.
After an outstanding performance for Norwich in the 2017/18 season, where he netted 15 goals in 49 appearances, Maddison was showered with personal accolades. These included the Championship Young Player of the Month award for January 2018, and the Championship Goal of the Month award for September 2017, and January 2018.
The midfielder was also nominated for the EFL Young Player of the Season, and made it to both the Championship and PFA Team of the Year.
Maddison moved on to Leicester City in July 2018, quickly making his Premier League debut against Manchester United at Old Trafford. His contributions led to 14 goals in his first season, earning him City's Young Player of the Season award.
During his tenure at Leicester, Maddison made 203 appearances and scored 55 goals, proving to be a pivotal player for the team.
In 2020/21, he won the Premier League’s Goal of the Month award for September, and played a key role in the Foxes lifting the FA Cup in May 2021.
His impressive performance carried on into the 2021/22 season, which began with a Community Shield victory over Manchester City.
Maddison was recognized as the club’s Player of the Season, after netting 18 goals and registering 12 assists. This remarkable performance was continued into the last season, where he contributed to 19 goals in just 30 appearances.
On the international stage, Maddison has been a strong player for England. After representing the country at the Under-21 level, he made his senior debut in a UEFA Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro in November 2019.
His consistent club performance earned him a spot in Gareth Southgate's 2022 World Cup squad and his first start for the Three Lions in March 2023, in a Euro 2024 qualifying match against Ukraine at Wembley Stadium.
