Salford City has announced the signing of goalkeeper Alex Cairns on a two-year deal, following a successful loan spell from League One side Fleetwood Town.

Cairns first joined Salford City on loan in January 2023 and has decided to return to the club permanently after Fleetwood released him. His new contract will commence from 1st July 2023.

During his previous tenure, Cairns quickly became a key player, making 26 appearances with a win rate of 50% and keeping four clean sheets.

His performances generated interest from other clubs, but the 30-year-old has committed his future to Salford City.

On rejoining the club, Cairns said, "I’m delighted it’s got done, we had some special times last year and I thought if the club did want to look at having me permanently then it would definitely be an option for me to sit down and have a conversation. Now I’m glad it’s done and I’m buzzing to be here!"

Cairns expressed his ambition for the club and the hunger he felt to achieve promotion.

He stated, "I came here with the ambition to get the club at minimum in the play-offs. We didn’t quite do it this year but with the group that we’ve got going into the season, that’s what sold it. I’ve spoken to the lads in the off season and they all want to be part of this project."

The goalkeeper spoke highly of the club and the connection he feels, stating, "It is a Club that I’ve got such a good connection with on and off the field, even people about the place who aren’t involved in the team have been absolutely brilliant for me so I’ve felt like I can make this a little bit of a home and really graft it out for the next two years, then hopefully we can get that promotion we really want."

Cairns concluded by expressing his excitement and readiness for the upcoming season, asserting, "Without a doubt it’s going to be a tough league, a tough season, but anything worth having you’ve got to fight for. I feel like I’m not done, I’ve still got more to give for me personally and us as a group so I’m dead excited."
