Chesterfield has confirmed the signings of experienced striker Will Grigg from MK Dons and Tom Naylor from Wigan Athletic

Will Grigg, the seasoned striker who previously played under Chesterfield manager Paul Cook at Wigan Athletic, was excited about reuniting with his former coach.

The 31-year-old said, "For me to drop down to the National League, it had to be something special. As soon as I found out about the interest, it was something I wanted to pursue. To finally get it over the line is an amazing feeling."

Grigg acknowledged the influential role Cook played in this move, stating, "[Paul Cook] had a massive role [in bringing me into the club]."

Grigg's career includes stints at Walsall, Brentford, and Wigan, before a headline-making move to Sunderland for a reported £3m in January 2019. He had joined MK Dons just last summer.

Grigg, born in England, has had an international career representing Northern Ireland, owing to his grandparent's heritage.

Meanwhile, Tom Naylor has inked a three-year contract with the Spireites after leaving Wigan Athletic.

The 31-year-old, who can ply his trade in midfield or central defence, is delighted with the opportunity to return home.

“It’s a great opportunity for me to come home. With what is going on at the club at the minute, it’s an exciting time," he said.

Naylor also expressed enthusiasm to work under manager Paul Cook, stating, “The gaffer is an experienced manager who has managed some big teams and been promoted a few times. I nearly signed for him at Wigan and I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Naylor's career started at Mansfield Town, and he has had spells with Derby County, Burton Albion, Portsmouth, and Wigan since the summer of 2021.
