Sunderland welcomes Nectarios Triantis as second summer signing from Central Coast Mariners
Sunderland AFC has fortified its defensive line with the addition of Nectarios Triantis, an Australian-born defender recently crowned an A-League champion with the Central Coast Mariners.
The 26-year-old player has committed to a four-year contract with Sunderland, joining Hemir from S. L. Benfica as the club's second acquisition of the summer.
Triantis was a cornerstone of the Mariners' triumphant 2022-23 campaign, making 26 appearances and helping the team secure its first A-League title in a decade with a decisive 6-1 victory over Melbourne City in the Grand Final.
Raised in Sydney, Triantis has not only proven his worth in the domestic league but has also gained international experience.
He has represented the Socceroos at both Under-20 and 23 levels. Before his successful stint with the Mariners, the young defender cut his teeth with Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers.
With the move to Sunderland, Triantis spoke of his excitement and ambition.
“I’m buzzing to be here - I just can’t wait to get started and play in front of the fans at this historic stadium. When a massive club like Sunderland comes in, you can never say no. It was a dream to have won the league with Central Coast Mariners, but now I hope to enjoy similar success with Sunderland,” he stated.
Sunderland's Sporting Director, Kristjaan Speakman, expressed his delight with the signing.
"Nectar’s progressed rapidly over the last 12 months - at both club and international level - and we are delighted that he selected Sunderland as his next step," Speakman said.
He continued, "On the pitch, and in possession, we feel he’s well aligned to our playing identity, whilst also possessing the balance of being a robust defender, which is vital in our league."
"We’ll be patient as he adjusts to new surroundings and adapts to a new style of play in a higher league, but we are confident that he’s got the personality to progress and develop his game."
