Brighton and Hove Albion have confirmed that the club's midfielder, Jeremy Sarmiento, has committed his future to the Seagulls by signing a new contract that runs until June 2027.

The deal also includes an option for an additional year for the Premier League club.

The Ecuadorian international, who is just 21 years old, joined Albion two years ago from Portuguese side Benfica, having earlier developed at Charlton Athletic's academy.

He made his first-team debut in a Carabao Cup victory over Swansea City in 2021 and later appeared in his first Premier League match against Leeds United in November of the same year.

Sarmiento had a breakout year last season, earning three caps for Ecuador in the World Cup and clocking up 12 appearances in all competitions for Brighton under the guidance of manager Roberto De Zerbi.

Born in Spain, Sarmiento had previously been capped for England at under-16, under-17 and under-18 level, before switching to represent the birth place of both his parents.

However, his promising run was cut short in March due to a foot injury sustained while on international duty.

Brighton's manager, De Zerbi, praised the young talent, stating, "Jeremy is a great guy and a very good player."

He further added, "Unfortunately, he couldn’t play in the last part of the season because of his injury, but we expect him to be a very important player for us in the coming years.”
