Plymouth Argyle lands Pleguezuelo from FC Twente
Plymouth Argyle has confirmed the signing of defender Julio Pleguezuelo on a two-year contract, marking their first summer signing and the first Spanish player in the club’s history.
The 26-year-old Pleguezuelo joins Argyle after rejecting an extension with FC Twente, a club competing in the Dutch top flight, the Eredivisie.
Despite Twente's recent success, securing a spot in the upcoming season’s Europa Conference League after triumphing in the play-off final, Pleguezuelo has chosen to commit to Argyle.
Having started his career in the youth programs of La Liga teams Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, Pleguezuelo moved to England at the age of 16 to join Arsenal.
He rose through the ranks to captain Arsenal’s Under-21 side, playing alongside talents such as Serge Gnabry, Emile Smith Rowe, and Reiss Nelson.
His journey took him back to Spain for two loan stints with Mallorca and Gimnastic, before playing a season with Arsenal in the Papa Johns Trophy and the first team.
In 2019, he made the move to Twente and has now completed nearly 100 games with the Dutch team.
Commenting on the new addition to the team, Argyle manager Steven Schumacher said, “I am delighted that Julio has become our first signing of the summer. He joins us with good pedigree behind him… Julio is a versatile defender who is excellent with the ball at his feet and will fit into the style of play we try to play perfectly."
