Mervue United -v- Wexford Youths
Two teams looking for a first win of the season in the Airtricity First Division meet tonight when Mervue United play hosts to Wexford Youths at Terryland Park with a 7.45 p.m. kick-off. Both teams have had similar starts to the new campaign with one point from their two games to date.
Mervue have were unlucky not to have taken something from their game against Athlone Town last Saturday night, eventually going down 1-0 to the midlanders for the second successive season in the two sides first meeting. Wexford recorded an encouraging 1-1 draw at home to promotion hopefuls Shelbourne, having come from a goal down at half time as Shane Dempsey level matters for Wexford’s first point of the season.
These two sides didn’t produce a whole lot of goals in their three meetings last season as they played out two scoreless draws, while Wexford won the first ever meeting between the two clubs 1-0, thanks to a David Breen goal last May.
Mervue manager Tom French has been satisfied with his players so far saying “We have a good team spirit here and we are all working hard at training to get things right, confidence is good in the camp and we can’t wait to get out again on Friday night. We are looking forward to this week’s game and putting last week’s result behind us. Wexford Youths will be a good test for us and their confidence should be high after getting a good draw with Shelbourne last Sunday”.
Having welcomed back experienced duo Nicky Curran and David O’Dowd last week, Mervue must do without Curran’s services again this week as he is suspended along with young midfielder Pat Hoban. The home team’s only injury sees David Goldbey miss out once again. Wexford have doubts over the experienced duo of David Breen and Anthony Wolfe but will welcome back Warren Broaders from suspension after he missed the game with Shelbourne.
Based on last season’s games there isn’t much between these two young sides and those venturing to tonight’s game will be hoping for more than the one goal scored in their three meetings of last season. It surely cannot be any worse goals wise.
Prediction: The home team to collect their first three points with a 2-1 win.
