Wednesday marks the one year date from the opening game of EURO 2024 set for Germany.

The tournament will kick-off with the opening match in Munich on 14 June 2024, all building towards the final

To celebrate the anniversary the Henri Delaunay trophy – which will be presented to the winning captain in Berlin’s Olympiastadion on 14 July 2024 – made an appearance today at the German Chancellery in Berlin.

Germany chancellor Olaf Scholz said: “It’s one year to go until the European Championship starts in Germany, a home game for Europe. We can rely on structures that already exist.

"This is something special as nothing has to be built from scratch, the stadiums are already there, and public transport has the capacity to cope with such a huge influx of spectators.”

The tournament director Philip Lahm also spoke at the event saying: “The world will come to us, to Germany, to the heart of Europe. I think this is an opportunity to show, who we are: open to the world, diverse and tolerant.

The tournament will be played across ten host cities – Berlin, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Köln, Leipzig, München and Stuttgart.

Ticket sales for the general public will be launched on 3 October via UEFA.com with the final draw set for early December in Hamburg.

The Republic of Ireland's hopes of qualifying for the tournament could be boosted over the next week as they play two Group B qualifiers - away to Greece on Friday and home to Gibraltar on Monday.
