Houghton commits to Plymouth Argyle with new two-year contract
Jordan Houghton, the 27-year-old midfielder for Plymouth Argyle, has extended his tenure at Home Park by signing a new two-year contract.
This announcement comes on the heels of Houghton helping the team secure the Sky Bet League One title last month, marking his third career promotion.
Since signing with Argyle in the summer of 2021, Houghton has appeared in exactly 100 games for the club over the past two seasons. This adds to the 10 appearances he made during a loan stint at Home Park in 2016.
Houghton's football career began with Chelsea, which he joined at age eight. He inked his first professional deal with the Blues a decade later.
During his time with Chelsea, Houghton went on loan to Gillingham and Doncaster Rovers, with whom he achieved a promotion from the Sky Bet League Two, in addition to his first spell with Argyle.
After being released by Chelsea in 2018, he signed with Milton Keynes Dons, where he again was part of a promotion-winning side.
Argyle's manager, Steven Schumacher, spoke highly of Houghton: “It is great to have Jordan confirmed as part of our squad for next season’s Championship campaign. He has been a huge part of our success over the past two seasons.”
“He has a knack of calming us down when we need it, showing maturity and composure to be a real leader for us on the pitch and off it. I am delighted he has agreed to stay.”
Neil Dewsnip, the club's Director of Football, echoed Schumacher's sentiment: “I’m delighted that Jordan has agreed to sign a deal to stay at the club. He’s an excellent passer of the ball and was a major driving force towards our success last season. His experience will be very advantageous as we look to tackle the Championship next season.”
