Henderson thrilled with Cork win

Stephen Henderson was a happy man after Waterford United's 2-0 victory over Cork City at Turner's Cross on Friday night.

The Blues went ahead with a straight-forward penalty from the ever-reliable Alan Carey, but the second goal saw ex-Cork City striker Vinny Sullivan produce a magnificent strike at the back post.

That proved to be enough for Henderson's side to collect their second win of the season and stay on top of the First Division table.

"We’re delighted because that was a fabulous atmosphere tonight. There was a great crowd and all credit to the Cork people for coming out and supporting them," said Henderson.

"I think we deserved the win, we dominated the game pretty much from the start."

When asked if the hastiness in which Cork were prepared was a key factor to Waterford's domination throughout the 90 minutes, Henderson was keen to play down the contrasting pre-seasons both clubs had.

"I went to watch City six weeks ago, and a lot of those players played then so they have been training," he added.

"I was surprised with the way they set up and didn’t expect them to drop as deep as they did. I thought we adapted to that, though, and we drew them out, getting some good crosses in."

The Blues boss had some kind words to say about the home team, who were very much outclassed on the night.

"We’re delighted with this win because these are a good group of players with Cork. If you look at that team, that's a good side and when you have 4,500 Rebels behind them it's going to be difficult," he said.

"The nerves didn't get to any of our players, we controlled the game. We kept the ball well and when we needed to push on we pushed on. Overall I'm thrilled with it."
