Mansfield Town has officially confirmed the signing of left-back Calum Macdonald. The Nottingham-born 25-year-old has committed to a two-year contract, with an option for a further year.

Macdonald began his professional football career at Derby County and garnered acclaim as the Rams’ under-23s Player of the Season for 2016/17. He also gained international experience, winning two caps for Scotland under-21s.

Following a loan spell at Barrow, Macdonald made a permanent move to League One side Blackpool.

After making 19 appearances for the Seasiders, he joined Tranmere Rovers on loan where he played a significant role in the team's impressive season, which saw them reaching the League Two Play-Offs. Subsequently, his move to Prenton Park became permanent.

After two seasons at Tranmere, Macdonald moved to Stockport County, before signing a short-term contract with Bristol Rovers earlier this year.

Mansfield Town manager Nigel Clough spoke of the new signing, saying, “Calum is a good, experienced left-back at this level having previously played over seventy League Two matches for Tranmere. With Macca (Stephen McLaughlin) missing the start of the season due to injury, we needed someone who can go straight into the line-up at left-back and Calum fits the bill.”

In response to his signing, Macdonald said, “I’m absolutely delighted to sign for the Stags. The club has kept a strong squad together and this seems like the perfect place for me at this stage of my career.”
