James McClean to stay at Wigan despite relegation to League One
Relegated Championship side Wigan Athletic have confirmed that James McClean will remain at the Latics for the upcoming 2023/24 season.
In the club’s retained list for the campaign ahead, the Derryman has been included in the list of players staying.
He has been joined on the roster by Ireland international duo Jamie McGrath and Will Keane.
Meanwhile, former Ireland under-21 forward Anthony Scully has also been retained by Wigan.
However, McClean later clarified on social media that he was ‘never out of contract to begin with’ at the DW Stadium.
During the 2022/23 Championship season, McClean was part of a Wigan side that was relegated to League One.
The Latics were dogged by off-field issues and were unable to stay up – joining Blackpool and Reading in the third-tier of English football next season.
