Lilywhites on look-out for new striker

After failing to get clearance for Sam Malsom to join their squad, Dundalk manager Ian Foster has set his sights on recruiting a new striker as quickly as possible.

The Lilywhites had hoped to sign the 22-year-old after he impressed during pre-season, although that option has now been shut down and they will have to search elsewhere for another frontman.

While there is still a chance that Malsom could sign for the club in July when the transfer window re-opens, Foster knows that he could do with some extra cover up front now especially since Tiaran Mulvenna is injured.

"Sam is somebody I was looking forward to working with,” Foster told the club's official website.

"He came over for the first two pre-season games against Athlone Town and Shelbourne, and then being the professional that he is, he tried to keep himself fit by playing for his local team so that he wouldn’t lose anything.

"He basically played after the transfer deadline of 22 February, and therefore we couldn’t register him. It’s unfortunate for Sam, but we’ll look at that situation again in July, and see if there’s something we can do then.

"I think we’ll have to look for a replacement, particularly with the injury to Tiarnán. We’re very light in that department now. It’s going to be difficult at this late stage to do that, but if we can move in the market and get somebody in who will add competition for places then we would like to do that."
